For Mark Twain, somewhere I read a collection where he had "The Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", followed by a version that had been published in France and which he had translated back (with a dictionary, I don't think he spoke French) to "see what those Frenchmen had done with his story". It was hilarious.

My Mark Twain favourites: Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offenses and The Awful German Language. They're both relatively short, but be sure to empty your bladder first anyway; I accept no responsibility for accidents.

I got two paragraphs into The Awful German Language and promptly got banned from the room for too much snickering, laughing, etc. :-)
